Axis Fitness | Mike Barnhart HGP #25

Axis Fitness co-owner, Mike Barnhart, starts each day before 4am so one could surmise Mike is passionate about fitness training. Mike’s experience in the equipment sales industry inspired him to open his own training facility. The Axis concept began in 2008 and in 2016 the Axis Fitness dream finally came to fruition. Axis showcases personal fitness programs, training plans, and a group training studio with bumpin’ music and a modern design. Axis is currently building their dream space, their first full gym model, which they have dubbed “a dollar and a dream.” This facility will make number 4 for the #AxisFam.

The Axis goal was to create their own workouts while targeting all 3 energy substrates: phosphates, glucose, and oxygen. Their workouts revolve around three elements: strength, endurance, and conditioning. They offer a variety of group workout classes including metcon, power barre, yoga, SUPFit, and group training.

CBD + Hemp: Oak City Cannabis | Tim McChesney HGP #24

Oak City Cannabis owner Tim McChesney is one of the few farmers participating in the Industrial Hemp Pilot Program. Tim has a small, 3 acre farm of about 2,000 plants. His farm focuses more on a high quality plant resulting in high quality CBD products.

Industrial hemp is the same species as marijuana (Cannabis sativa) but the two crops are distinguishable by their tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content. Marijuana contains both THC and CBD, and these compounds have different effects. Hemp is limited to 0.2% to 0.3% THC. THC levels in marijuana are generally 3%-15%. The least processed form of the cannabis plant, known as hemp, contains most of the CBD used medicinally. Unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive. This means that it does not change the state of mind of the person who uses it. However, CBD does appear to produce significant changes in the body, and some research suggests that it has medical benefits, including pain relief.

Mitch McConnell (R) introduced Farm Bill 2018 on April 12, 2018, which could fully legalize industrial hemp. The Hemp Farming Act is a proposed law to remove hemp from Schedule I controlled substances list and making it an ordinary agricultural commodity. Now, after four years of research Congress is expected in September to make the crop legal for Americans to grow for the first time in nearly 50 years.

Farm-to-Table Chef & Surf House Restaurant Owner: Craig Love HGP#23

Farm-to-Table Chef and Surf House restaurant owner, Craig Love, wants to change the way people think about food. Craig’s restaurant uses seasonal produce from local, small farms and sustainable, regional seafood. Working in high end restaurants throughout his college career Craig was able to apply philosophies learned from his exposure to his 2,400 sq. ft. coastal restaurant. Surf House is a dinner-only upscale restaurant where guests can enjoy relaxed but high-end dining mixed with southern hospitality, including craft cocktails and house-made desserts. Their goal is to move beyond a high-season tourist business and develop the food scene into a year-round industry.

Craig has been featured in multiple magazines, including Coastal Living and Our State. He was most recently named 2018 Entrepreneur of the Year by Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce. Patty Barshay: Montessori Philosophy + Methodology HGP#22

Montessori education has been around for hundreds of years and is becoming increasingly popular in the U.S.. In this conversation with long time Montessorian, Patty Barshay, we explore Montessori Philosophy and Methodology. We breakdown each topic into Approach, Classroom, and Age Planes. Montessori schools are exceptionally successful, so why aren’t there more of them? Patty thinks it might be due to a lack of teacher training centers.

Patty is Montessori Certified from birth to 6th grade and has been a Montessori teacher since 1974. She has over 37 years experience and has had the good fortune to teach two of her grandchildren. Patty currently spends her time volunteering at the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum where she is still using her Montessori education. In addition to classroom education, she is also a Field Consultant for Teacher Interns and she also serves several schools as a Montessori Consultant.

Since Montessori has been around for awhile, there are plenty of adults who were Montessori students as children. Overcoming Anorexia | Ola Van Zyl Positive Vitality Nutrition: HGP#18

Nutrition can be powerful and life changing. At 13 years old Ola Van Zyl put herself on a diet. Ola compared herself to photos in magazines and wanted to be skinny like the women she saw. This pressure to look a certain way led to control over her eating and soon she went from being a vegetarian to reducing her food groups and the amount of food she ate until she found herself weighing 81.5 pounds (37 kilograms) as a 5’4″ (1.65 meters) young woman in her 20’s.

Ola suffered from anorexia for 15 years until she overcame the disease but she still left with symptoms. Physically she was better but mentally she still suffered. She was eating food but wasn’t eating the right foods. This resulted in Ola feeling depressed, anxious, and moody, and feeling thus, she isolated herself from friends and family. One day she realized: Everyone else was happy and she wanted to be happy too. This epiphany inspired her to study nutrition and make some life changing habits that would ultimately transform her into a totally different person. Now she eats clean, exercises, and weighs a healthy and beautiful 125 pounds (57 kilograms).

Surfrider Foundation Cape Fear Chapter former Chair and current Board Member, Ethan Crouch, joins us to talk about making effective change in your community. We also discuss taking care of our oceans, climate change, and reducing our plastics footprint.

Being environmentally conscious has been a part of Ethan’s whole life. Ethan grew up gardening, spent time in the woods, and enjoyed sailing and fishing in the Chesapeake Bay. Ethan also enjoys surfing and fishing on the Cape Fear Coast and feels fortunate to be surrounded by so many beautiful waterways (a yacht basin, a river, and the ocean). This appreciation for nature is the driving force for him to be a good steward of our natural environment. Once he found out there was a grass roots organization working hard to help protect the things on this earth he loves so much he knew he had to get involved. Ethan joined Surfrider Foundation in 2004 during undergraduate studies and has been volunteering non-stop with them ever since.

In addition to environmental topics we also discuss how you can make a difference in your local community.
